6th Grade Science Spotlight: Benjamin Banneker & Sundials!
Our 6th-grade students explored the life and contributions of Benjamin Banneker, an African American scientist, mathematician, and astronomer known for:
✅ Helping to survey and design Washington, D.C.
✅ Publishing almanacs filled with astronomical calculations
✅ Accurately predicting solar and lunar eclipses
✅ Advocating against slavery through his letters to Thomas Jefferson
Building on Banneker’s work in astronomy, students designed their own rudimentary sundials in class! They made predictions about how shadows change throughout the day and discussed how factors like the sun's position, cloud cover, and the environment impact a sundial's ability to tell time.
Hands-on learning at its best!
Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar and CentraCare Career Day hosted a group of ACGC students interested in the medical field along with Human Anatomy students as part of a Healthcare Career Day Event held on-site at Rice Memorial Hospital. Students got to see a wide variety of career opportunities in the hospital setting along with many hands on experiences.
