We teamed up with Atwater Public Library and the Science Museum of MN to bring the Water Assembly to ACGC! Students investigated water in its various stages, how water moves through land and how Minnesota’s seasons impact the way that water interacts with all forms of life.

6th Grade Social Studies Art Project: Flower Detective! 🌸 Today, our 6th graders combined history, science, and creativity in an exciting "Flower Detective" art project! 🎨🔎 We explored Minnesota’s state flower, the pink-and-white lady’s slipper, and learned about its history, beauty, and importance in our state. Students used washable markers, coffee filters, and water to create their own delicate, colorful petals, mimicking the natural blending of colors in the real flower. After carefully shaping their petals, they displayed their masterpieces on our Minnesota State Flower Wall! 🌿✨ 🌼 Discussion Question: Why do you think the lady’s slipper was chosen as Minnesota’s state flower? Drop your thoughts in the comments! 👇

Today in Earth Science, our 6th graders turned into structural engineers as they designed and tested buildings to withstand earthquakes! Using mini marshmallows and toothpicks, students built different structures—towers, pyramids, bridges, and even geodesic domes—to see which could survive the shake test! 💡 Experiment Steps: 1️⃣ Constructed buildings using marshmallows & toothpicks (cube buildings, pyramids, skyscrapers, and more!). 2️⃣ Placed them on a shaking platform (a tray or book). 3️⃣ Simulated earthquakes by gently shaking… then shaking harder! 🌊 4️⃣ Observed which structures stayed standing and which ones collapsed. 5️⃣ Modified & improved designs to create more earthquake-resistant buildings! 🔍 Key Discoveries: 🏢 Wider bases helped tall structures stay stable. 🔺 Triangles and cross-bracing made buildings stronger! 🌉 Bridges were tricky—some snapped, some flexed! 🏗️ Geodesic domes were surprisingly strong under pressure! Our young engineers learned firsthand that real-life architects and scientists design buildings to withstand earthquakesusing special materials and support structures. Engineering + Science = A Fun, Hands-On Lesson! 🙌 Want to test this at home? Grab some marshmallows, toothpicks, and a sturdy book… and start shaking!

After learning about the adventures and challenges on the Oregon Trail, 7th Grade US History students had fun playing the Oregon Trail Card Game. During the game, they learned about the success stories, hardships, and diseases encountered by pioneers in the 1800s. Surprisingly, very few students died from dysentery while playing!

🌥️ 6th Grade Earth Science: Cloud in a Jar Experiment! 🌥️ Today in 6th-grade Earth Science, we brought the sky into our classroom with our Cloud in a Jar experiment! ☁️🔬 Using just hot water, ice, and a little bit of hairspray, students created their own clouds inside a jar—witnessing firsthand how water vapor rises, cools, and condenses into tiny droplets, just like in the atmosphere! 🌡️❄️ Science is all about curiosity and discovery, and today was a great example of hands-on learning in action. Ask your student what they observed during the experiment! What did their cloud look like? Who knew creating clouds could be so cool? (Or should we say… cold? ❄️😆)

Mrs. Walsh brought in her great-grandmother's phonograph for sixth graders to check out during social studies. Students learned what entertainment may have looked like for an immigrant in the 1900s. They were able to listen to a few songs and check out the Edison cylinders that play the music.

This past weekend, ACGC Junior Quinn Eisenbacher represented ACGC as a member of the MMEA All-State Choir at the Midwinter Convention in Minneapolis. Quinn auditioned for an All-State spot last March and was selected for the choir as an Alto I. Students attended camp in August at St. John's University, where they met their guest conductor and attended long hours of rehearsals and sectionals, then presented a concert at the end of the camp. All of the young musicians met again in February to perform at Orchestra Hall. Both concerts are the result of great dedication and commitment by some of the most talented young musicians in Minnesota.
